Saffron Dawn Europe

Saffron Dawn Europe – English Version

We firmly believe in a quite ordinary nevertheless true statement: we live in an era where the only taboo is not consuming and not believing in consumerism; it is taboo to refuse the immediate use and the rapid change of technology, which helps controlling the world, in favor of a search for the eternal. It is difficult nowadays to scandalize, to provoke, being this an epoch, where we have forgotten the beauty that lies in decency and shyness, in paradox, in abstraction and in solitude; one way to trigger some furious reaction however, is to describe ourselves as complicit in this condition of things, as reconciled human beings within patterns of behavior that we once opposed, but we have now totally accepted. Everyone expressing a strong refusal towards this condition of things is immediately accused of hypocrisy, of being a dreamer, of wanting to judge from above; a beautiful, ancient face to face conversation is destroyed as soon as the subject is tackled.
We ‘toss’ this relaxed and evocative gabble of a song from England, where these notes were written. England, equally and sometimes in an even greater fashion than the rest of Europe, is at risk of depersonalization, every shop is becoming part of a chain, every aspect of daily life is ruled through economic transactions, it is becoming normal here to experience a new kind of conversation: human beings sitting around the same table, everyone intent in watching a little screen broadcasting their own life. This song is a spontaneous musical encounter between Matjaz Mlakar, Alessandro Gobbi and me, this song wants to stink like spirituality, mystery, religion, history, difference, exchange, Europe, when Europe was an adventure. We are deviant, as we still want to be in history, we still want to be different, we still want to play keeping all the sharp edges of our differences.

Song composition:
'Saffron Dawn Europe' was commissioned by the label Kaspar House to Andrea Giommi to feature in their A-B Normal series.
Giommi started working on a repetitive piano pattern, to which he added pots violently percussed, low tuned synths and kazoo screams, to give this draft of a song a tribal and claustrophobic atmosphere.
Matjaz Mlakar is the saxophone player of the Slovenian balkan jazz combo Jazoo, his contributions to the song were recorded in London in December 2014, as Jazoo were playing a string of 8 shows in the British capital. His ability to instantly tune in a song despite keeping his own personal eastern european sound immediately triggered the communicational spirit of the song, which became a bridge towards two different cultures, two different musical mindsets. Alessandro Gobbi - Italian drummer and producer with The Emerald Leaves, Montana and Denis The Night and The Panic Party- glued the sounds together adding his drums in a noisy -jazzy fashion.
The song literarily crosses Europe, from the Eastern European sax motive that introduces and closes the piece, to the overlapping Christian chants recorded in a church in Wien to the disturbing yet spiritual drone sound of industrial percussions and synths, so close to many experiences in avant-garde European music.
